James Hawkins

James Hawkins (father of Sam Hawkins), has kindly lent us some beautiful artwork to hang up around the lodge. It has really helped us to put a modern twist on this beautiful old building.
"An abstract realist who invests his work with limitless energy which seems to bounce back off the multi coloured canvas.

James Hawkins of Rhue is the man who has come the closest to the impossible task of capturing the essence of a landscape that is like trying to paint the colours of the wind." WEST HIGHLAND FREE PRESS

Assynt Ceramics Workshop and Gallery

Located in the Old Stables at Glencanisp ,the Gallery features the distinctive hand thrown tableware and decorative ceramics made by Fergus Stewart from stoneware and porcelain clays. His work is wood fired using local timber and is salt glazed, giving a robust surface suitable for dishwasher and oven. The choice of colours is influenced by the vibrant greens, blues and natural tones within the Sutherland landscape and the rich and variegated surfaces decorated by the passage of the flame through the kiln.
The Gallery is open 2pm-6pm, sunday- Friday from April through until October.
Appointments can be made to visit at other times throughout the year.

Crafting for me is currently a hobby with little financial gain but if I were able to I would love to make a living from it. At the moment, I make my living working with children both in Primary school and nursery. This is very rewarding and I like to use my art skills to teach the children. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is my motto and I love up cycling items that would otherwise be put in the bin or no longer wanted. I use a wide variety of materials and techniques, which is ever widening. I have recently learnt crochet and am using my skill to make items for the refugee children who desperately need things to keep them warm when it’s cold.

I have a room full of old buttons, broken jewellery, used envelopes and much more. Double sided tape is one of my best friends when making all cards and gift tags. As is needles, thread, my sewing machine and scissors when doing textile work. Not to forge my pliers when doing jewellery work or my new friend the crochet hook, we still need some time to become best friends.

I hope you like my work and if you take something home, it gives you a warm glow knowing you have helped the environment a little bit.
